Make your own rug in San Francisco.

Choose a design, work yarn into a fabric backing with a tufting gun, then finish a rug or wall piece you made yourself. Our team guides you through the process, so beginners are welcome.

From an idea to a finished piece

  1. Choose a design and a frame. Bring the design on your phone or choose a studio template. The image is projected onto the backing so you can trace it.
  2. Learn to use the tufting gun and fill the design with yarn. Tools, yarn, backing fabric and instruction are included.
  3. Finish your piece with the team’s guidance. Take it home as a rug, wall decoration or a handmade gift, with care advice for your project.

Choose a frame and set aside the time

Plan for about 3 to 5 hours. The frame and design affect how long the piece takes, so this works best when you can enjoy the process without rushing to your next stop.

Compare the current small, medium and large frames, dimensions, estimated times and total prices in the booking calendar. The online deposit is $20 per guest and is part of the workshop total; check the remaining amount before you reserve.

Start with a clear shape and a few distinct colors. Tiny details, fine lines and busy backgrounds are harder to reproduce in yarn. Our image selection guide shows real Works and Avoid examples. You can email the studio your design ahead of time to ask about preparation.

A date, a day with friends, or a piece for home

Each guest normally books their own frame. A small frame is for one person. Couples who want to share a medium or large frame should contact the studio before booking so the arrangement is clear.

For a practical or decorative project, choose the frame and image around where you want to use the finished piece. Ask the team about care for that specific project.

Tufting is for ages 12 and up; guests under 18 need an adult with them. If you’re planning a family visit, contact the studio about the group’s ages and supervision before reserving. Perler beads are another way to make something together.
